DMAIC

DMAIC is the structured five-phase problem-solving framework at the core of Lean Six Sigma, guiding teams from problem definition through data analysis to sustained improvement.

What is DMAIC?

DMAIC stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. It is the primary framework used in Lean Six Sigma for improving existing processes. Each phase builds on the previous one, creating a disciplined path from identifying a problem to implementing and sustaining a solution.

  1. Define — Clearly state the problem, its scope, and the expected outcome. Identify stakeholders, establish project goals, and define what "success" looks like in measurable terms.
  2. Measure — Collect data on the current process to establish a performance baseline. Understand how the process operates today before attempting to change it.
  3. Analyze — Use data and analytical tools to identify root causes of the problem. Distinguish between symptoms and true drivers of poor performance.
  4. Improve — Develop and implement solutions that address the root causes. Test changes, validate results, and refine the approach.
  5. Control — Standardize the improved process and put monitoring systems in place to ensure gains are sustained over time. Update standard work, create control plans, and hand off to operations.

DMAIC is closely related to PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) but is more structured and data-intensive, making it better suited for complex problems that require statistical analysis and cross-functional coordination.

For manufacturing teams, DMAIC provides a repeatable structure that prevents improvement efforts from stalling or reverting:

  • Prevents jumping to conclusions — The Measure and Analyze phases require teams to validate assumptions with data before implementing changes
  • Ensures sustainability — The Control phase makes sure that improvements don't erode after the project team moves on
  • Enables cross-functional improvement — DMAIC provides a common structure that teams from different departments can follow together
  • Builds organizational capability — Each completed DMAIC project creates documented knowledge that can be applied to future problems
